CHARLIE
A production by the Junges Theater an der Ruhr – Laboratory I

“Good morning, Charlie. A new working day begins. New day, new luck.”
In a world where performance determines a person’s worth, everyone lives for a single goal: promotion to Rank A. There, so they say, freedom, happiness, self-determination and a life without fear await. Every day, the Charlies work diligently, conforming and full of hope. They follow the rules, keep their doubts to themselves and believe in the system’s promise.
But no one has ever seen Rank A…
“Charlie” is a gripping and poetic play about the pressure to perform, control, the longing for individuality and the courage to find one’s own voice. Labor I tells the story of a society that turns people into numbers and of young people who decide to be more than just part of a system.
