Wilhelm Tell
Friedrich Schiller
"Der kann nicht klagen über harte Spruch,
Den man zum Meister seines Schicksals macht."
Friedrich Schiller's drama triggered an enthusiasm that reached its peak in the 19th century: the figure of the stalwart crossbowman, loner and outdoorsman was stylized as a symbol of righteous resistance. In the 20th century, Schiller's play became a treasure trove for both right-wing and left-wing propaganda. - But who is the marksman Tell, who greets no hats and shoots an apple from his son's head, frees himself from captivity with a fabulous leap to the shore and finally becomes an assassin? A freedom fighter, an individualist or just a murderer after all? And who are the men who gather for nightly invocations of tradition and fatherland? What is justice and can the individual take his fate into his own hands? Is Schiller's drama still suitable today as a guide to resistance?
"Abtreiben wollen wir verhassen Zwang.
Die alten Rechte, wie wir sie ererbt
von unsern Vätern, wollen wir bewahren,
nicht ungezügelt nach dem Neuen greifen."
The director: Jo Fabian, director, choreographer and visual artist, became nationally and internationally known in the 1990s with his "sensual, rousing picture theater." His works are repeatedly represented at festivals (including two productions at the Berlin Theatertreffen).
