Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari
Filmscreening with Livemusik
Robert Wiene's epoch-making silent film "Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari" from 1920 intertwines the themes of mass, intoxication and madness in a special way. It tells the story of the mad Dr. Caligari, who, with the help of a sleepwalker named Cesare, terrifies a small northern German town. During the day, Caligari presents Cesare, who suffers from a strange, trance-like illness, at the fair. There he predicts the future to onlookers. At night, however, this slave of Caligari sneaks through the city and commits terrible murders. Solving the crimes eventually leads to a psychiatric hospital and probably one of the most famous plot twists in film history.
We will show "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" with a spectacular film score by Kornelius Heidebrecht (synths & live electronics), Rolf Springer (guitar & sax) and Timafei Birukov (drums & vibraphone). The trio, known from the production of "The Bacchae," will let their distinctive soundscapes emerge live in the theater, bringing the expressionist psychological thriller into the present with a rapturous soundtrack.
A ticket must be purchased to attend the performance.
