Eddie talks casually about his life in the high-rise: about Mr Taniwa, his family, and Ommi, who knows that a fireball is set to crash into the Earth today at 3.34 am. But nobody cares. In Eddie’s life, things keep going wrong, even within the family. At the hospital, it’s better to say you fell off the swing. You still get ice cream as a reward. It is heartbreaking to see how Eddie talks himself into a sense of normality that he doesn’t have: a safe home full of security. After yet another escalation of domestic violence, he regrets that the world didn’t end. Mr Taniwa has an idea. Uta Bierbaum knows exactly how to use her language and has mastered the art of making the heavy visible with ease. (Theresia Walser, Selection Committee for KinderStücke 2026)
