Art-Installations

Straddling the line between chaos and order, the works by international artists demonstrate how nature, society, technology and identity are shaped by unpredictable forces.

Semi-Diurnal Spaces by Studio Above&Below (London) translates tidal and atmospheric data into a digital sculpture. The installation transforms the foyer into an audiovisual landscape in which the forces of nature break through the controlled surfaces of screen culture.

Thomas Ruff (Düsseldorf) is one of the most significant international figures in contemporary photography. At the Theater an der Ruhr, four works from his series *Plakate* (1996–1997) are on display in a special format. His engagement with political events of the time, which Thomas Ruff did not wish to leave uncommented, sparked his interest in political art. Inspired by the works of John Heartfield and Russian propaganda posters from the 1920s and 1930s, he developed various ‘posters’, which he created as digital collages from existing visual material.

Gonzalo H. Rodríguez’s (Berlin) Fragmenting a Future of Metal and Melancholy tells the story of a city in the future. Overwhelmed by a chaos of electronic waste and technological debris, it becomes a habitat for non-human inhabitants as well. Through AR, their stories reach us in short video sequences via five objects.

The VR installation Oneironautica V by MIREVI (Düsseldorf) demonstrates how individual actions transform collective systems. Small gestures cause a group to oscillate between rigid conformity and a newfound openness.

With chaos brings order in the Land of Ideas, everyone understands this straight away, Karl Kunitz satirises the German attitude to order: 16 cupboard compartments, federal states and garden gnomes form an absurd order, behind which the chaotic becomes visible.
