The Theater an der Ruhr was founded in 1980 as an alternative model—a new type of ensemble theater. The concept of the ensemble, which includes all of the theater’s staff, and the idea of touring make the Theater an der Ruhr a special venue for contemporary theater and art. The Theater an der Ruhr is located in a former mineral baths complex in the historic Raffelberg Park on the border between Mülheim an der Ruhr and Duisburg. The Raffelberg Park is considered one of the most significant historic park complexes in the Ruhr region, with cultural and historical significance as the former spa park of the Raffelberg Thermal Baths (1899).
