CHAOS

Where there are no longer any patterns, chaos reigns – but it also reigns where no order has yet emerged. This is reflected in the Greek origin of the word χάος (cháos): an undefined space in which matter is only just beginning to develop – the primordial state of the world, an immeasurable potential for energy. Chaos lies at the origin of freedom and creativity; yet chaotic states can be very frightening... 
Alongside the emotional turmoil in our private lives, the daily traffic chaos and the deluge of information and data, we are currently also witnessing, on a larger scale, a growing sense of confusion: the principles of order that have long guided societies are breaking down, structures and institutions are being called into question, and global agreements are being set aside. These tendencies towards dissolution are welcomed and encouraged by some, whilst others are left feeling anxious and at a loss...

Between new beginnings and finding our bearings, between chance and change, new stories, new encounters, and new perspectives emerge. CHAOS is the theme for the 2026/27 season at the Theater an der Ruhr – as a reflection of our present and as a creative space for what is yet to come.

We invite you to join us in launching a season that doesn’t seek to organize chaos, but rather to explore it.
