One Season – Three Theatre Islands
The Theater an der Ruhr is opening a new chapter in its more than forty-year history, embarking on a radical new path within the German theatre landscape. Since the 2023/24 season, we have invited audiences to three concentrated Theatre Islands, each centred around a shared theme for the season.
Over a period of four to six weeks, each Theatre Island brings together a unique programme of theatre, workshops, concerts, installations, readings, lectures and conversations. Experts, artists and audiences come together for these events to explore and discuss the issues shaping our present.
The three Theatre Islands bring together artistic practice and social exchange. They redefine the place of theatre: as a collective space for thinking and encounter, where we come together to explore which phenomena and desires are rising to the surface of our shared social life.
One Season - One Theme
Each season is shaped by an overarching theme that connects the three theatre islands. The various artistic voices of our theatre, with their different approaches, working methods and perspectives, engage with this theme, making it the subject of a multifaceted aesthetic exploration. In the 2026/27 season, Theater an der Ruhr is dedicating itself to the theme of “Chaos” You can find information about our current theatre island, “Chaos” here.
