Uprising in Iran
For over two decades, the Theater an der Ruhr has fostered exchanges with artists from Iran. The series Aufbruch im Iran is a tangible expression of this ongoing relationship.
The situation of Iranian artists forms the backdrop for this work. The series is conceived as both a space for dialogue and for artistic exploration. It brings together theater, film, and discourse, creating a space for diverse voices.
Most recently, we co-produced the play Destination: Origin by Mohammad Rasoulof, which, in addition to addressing issues of exile and identity, brings to life the recurring uprisings in Iran as an echo of a society that refuses to be silenced. Three of the play’s actors also appeared in Rasoulof’s film The Seed of the Sacred Fig, which was nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe, among other awards. Like the director, they were subsequently forced into exile.
