Szene Istanbul
The Theater an der Ruhr’s connection to Turkey’s theater scene dates back many years. Since its first guest performances in Ankara and Istanbul in 1986, a continuous relationship has developed; through tours, through the organization of guest performances by the Turkish State Theater in Germany, through Roberto Ciulli’s three-week theater seminar in Istanbul in 1993 at the invitation of the Turkish Ministry of Culture and the General Director of the State Theater, and finally through the first co-production between a German theater and the Turkish State Theater in 1994.
Today, the Theater an der Ruhr maintains close, long-standing ties with Istanbul’s independent theater scene. “Szene Istanbul” has grown out of this decades-long collaboration. Performances as part of “Szene Istanbul” feature German surtitles. Following each performance, there is an opportunity to speak with the ensembles about the production, working in Istanbul, or what theater is capable of achieving.
