The Theater an der Ruhr is housed in a historic Art Nouveau building, surrounded by Raffelberg Park, set apart from the city centers in a unique location. Since the theater’s reorientation, a fundamental question has arisen: How does a place like this remain vibrant, even between theater seasons?

The answer is 300m².

The theater’s foyer—once a traditional waiting area—is now an open space for social interaction and art. It is a place without pressure to consume, without barriers, and open to everyone. Here, artistic work and social exchange converge: concerts, workshops, exhibitions, installations, discussions, family and vacation programs, and participatory theater projects transform the reception area into a vibrant part of the theater.

Some programs have become firmly established. The “Theater Playground,” for example, invites families with children to discover the theater through play. Participatory productions, developed based on interviews with Mülheim residents, bring people to the theater and bring them together.

And when pressing social issues arise, the foyer responds: as a space for discourse, as a place for exchange, and as a stage for what’s happening right now.
